Very few alterations were made on the estate and it was subsequently recognized for its excellent architectural and historic
integrity by being listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. In early 2015, Harboe Architects was retained as the historic preservation consultant by the New York architecture firm KG & D and responsible for the completion of a historic structure report for the entire estate as well as the restoration construction documents for the main house. The project includes the restoration of the exterior and interior of the building as well as new MEP and fire alarm systems. Harboe Architects has currently completed the historic structure report and submitted Design Development documents
in April of 2016. The restoration construction documents will be completed pending funding.

The Merestead estate is located just outside Mount Kisco, NY, and was acquired in 1906 by William Sloane, the president of the highend interior furnishings company W & J Sloane. Its bucolic setting and proximity to railroad transportation made the estate’s site an ideal location for Sloane to build his new country house. The site consisted of a few 19th century farmstead buildings to which Sloane
added his own Georgian Revival styled country house, a carriage house, a garage, as well as additional farmstead buildings. While some of the farmstead buildings are vernacular, the main house and some of the support buildings were designed by the firm Delano and Aldrich. Although little known at the time, Delano and Aldrich would become a prominent and fashionable East Coast architectural firm that specialized in the classical revival styles. Currently the house is owned by the State of New York but up until 2000, was held by the family.
